AA Degree General Education Requirements


Associate in Arts students must complete 60 college credits to complete the degree; 36 of these credits must be general education credits distributed across five subject area categories. A student must satisfy the required number of credits in each category. No more than 1 credit may be selected from the list of General Education Electives (category F).

The remaining 24 elective credits should be selected in consultation with an advisor, who will assist the student in selecting college credits most advantageous to the student’s educational goals.

Courses Meeting General Education Requirements


A. Communications Skills: 6


Communications courses meet the Gordon Rule (FAC Rule 6A-10.030) writing requirements. Credits earned in these courses at NWFSC or by transfer that are applicable towards the AA general education requirement shall be based on a minimum grade of “C.”

B. Mathematics: 6-7


Mathematics courses meet the Gordon Rule (FAC Rule 6A-10.030) mathematics requirements. Credits earned in these courses at NWFSC or by transfer that are applicable towards the A.A. general education requirement shall be based on a minimum grade of “C.”

Select two general education Gordon Rule mathematics courses from the list below:

C. Humanities: 6


Humanities courses meet the Gordon Rule (FAC Rule 6A-10.030) writing requirements. Credits earned in these courses at NWFSC or by transfer that are applicable towards the A.A. general education requirement shall be based on a minimum grade of “C.”

Select two general education Gordon Rule Humanities courses following either Plan A, B, or C:

  1. Choose one course from Area I, and one course from Area II, OR
  2. Choose two courses from Area II, and a Speaking-Across-the-Curriculum (SATC) course from Category F to meet the SATC  requirement, OR
  3. Choose two courses from Area I.

Select a science course from each of the three areas below:

Select a social science course from each of the areas below OR select two course from Area I.

I. Gordon Rule Social Sciences


Social science courses in Area I meet the Gordon Rule (FAC Rule 6A-10.030) writing requirements. Credits earned in these courses at NWFSC or by transfer that are applicable towards the A.A. general education requirement shall be based on a minimum grade of “C.”

II. General Social Sciences


F. General Education Electives: 1


Only 1 credit of the total credits for the course selected may apply toward A.A. degree general education; the remaining credits may be counted toward the twenty-four credit electives required for the A.A. degree. Student taking a 4 hour Mathematics or Science course may use the extra hour not required for those areas to fulfill the general education elective.

      • 3 hours in General Social Sciences - Area E
      • 1 hour in General Education Elective - if areas A through E do not equal 36 - Area F
    • 24 hours of college credit A.A. transferable electives
  • Have you completed at least 15 of the 60 credits at NWFSC?
  • Have you completed the foreign language requirement?
  • Have you completed the Speaking-Across-the-Curriculum requirement? (Look for courses with †)
  • Have you met the minimum 2.0 GPA requirements for the A.A.?
  • Have you applied for graduation  by the advertised deadline?
