The student will demonstrate mastery of major works of English literature, which deal with univeral concepts and viewpoints.

The student will relate the social, religious, and political environment of a period to the literature of that period.

The student will read for ideas that have universal value and recognize these ideas in current life and thought.

The student will demonstrate basic competence in understanding major literary works and their authors selected from the romantic period through the twentieth century.

The student will recognize and apply basic critical terminology.

The student will write subjective interpretations of specific literary works.

The student will research and create definitive documented papers on assigned literary subjects.

The student will prepare for advanced literary study through synthesis of background materials and reading of the literature.
