MAC1140 - Pre-Calc Algebra - 3 Credit Hours

Math General EducationNWF State College

The student will identify characteristics of polynomial functions such as zeros (real and imaginary), intercepts, turning points, degree, leading term, and end behavior, and graph them, or given such identifying characteristics of a polynomial function, students will construct the polynomial function.

he student will identify characteristics of rational functions such as zeros, intercepts, vertical asymptotes, nonvertical asymptote, and domain, and graph them, or given such identifying characteristics of a rational function, students will construct the rational function.

he student will calculate the inverse of a linear function, quadratic function (with restricted domain), rational function, exponential function, and logarithmic function.

he student will identify, graph, determine domain and range, and solve applications involving, exponential, and logarithmic functions, including financial applications such as compound interest, and growth and decay modules such as uninhibited growth, radioactive decay, logistic growth, and Newton’s Law of Cooling.

The student will identify characteristics of conic sections such as vertices (parabolas, ellipses, hyperbolas), directrices (parabolas), foci and centers (ellipses, hyperbolas), and oblique asymptotes (hyperbolas) and graph them, or given such identifying characteristics of a conic section, students will construct an equation for the conic section, and they will solve applications involving conic sections.

Students will represent sequences and series using proper notation, find the nth term and sum of a finite arithmetic or geometric sequence, and find the sum of a convergent infinite geometric series.

Students will perform operations on matrices including determinants and solve systems of linear equations both analytically and by using the graphing calculator, and they will solve applications involving systems of linear equations.
