Humanities - A Contemporary Perspective

Course Description

This course serves as a focused survey of the humanities within the twentieth century. While the chronology of this discipline is narrowly framed, this course focuses on the creative endeavors of Western culture from the early Edwardian period to modern/postmodern era. Students should learn the various techniques, forms, and basic evaluative tools related to the analysis and interpretation of: visual arts/architecture, literature/poetry, theater/film, philosophy/religion, and social movements. While visual elements are utilized as much as possible, exploration into philosophical, cultural, and social interpretations is also included. Course readings will be derived from the Western canon and other relevant works.

Prerequisite(s)

a passing score on the standardized placement test measuring communications/verbal/reading achievement, successful completion of any required developmental English and Reading coursework with a grade of C or better, or exemption from placement testing.
