AS Degree General Education Requirements

All A.S. degree programs at NWFSC require a minimum of 18 college credits in general education. Unless otherwise specified in the program requirements, students must complete one course from each of the following categories to meet general education requirements. A.S. degree-seeking students must also meet Speaking-Across-the-Curriculum , Technology-Across-the-Curriculum  and Gordon Rule course and minimum grade requirements  described in the General Education for All Degrees  section of the catalog.

Communications Skills (3 credits required):


Communications courses meet the Gordon Rule (FAC Rule 6A-10.030) writing requirements. Credits earned in these courses at NWFSC or by transfer that are applicable towards the AA general education requirement shall be based on a minimum grade of “C.”

Humanities (3 credits required):


Humanities courses meet the Gordon Rule (FAC Rule 6A-10.030) writing requirements. Credits earned in these courses at NWFSC or by transfer that are applicable towards the A.A. general education requirement shall be based on a minimum grade of “C.”

Mathematics (3 credits required):


Mathematics courses meet the Gordon Rule (FAC Rule 6A-10.030) mathematics requirements. Credits earned in these courses at NWFSC or by transfer that are applicable towards the A.A. general education requirement shall be based on a minimum grade of “C.”

Social Sciences (3 credits required):


General Education Electives (2 credits required):


Total AS General Education Credits Required: 18


AS Degree Checklist:


  • Have you completed a minimum of 18 credit hours in the following areas?
    • 3 hours in Communications – Gordon Rule (minimum grade of “C”)
    • 3 hours in Humanities – Gordon Rule (minimum grade of “C”)
    • 3 hours in Social Sciences – Gordon Rule (minimum grade of “C”)
    • 3 hours in Mathematics – Gordon Rule (minimum grade of “C”)
    • 4 hours in Science
    • 2 hours in General Education Electives
  • Have you completed the required Core and Technical Elective course work for your A.S. degree?
  • Have you completed at least 25% of the total number of credits for your A.S. degree at NWFSC?
  • Have you completed the Speaking-Across-the-Curriculum requirement? (Courses with †)
  • Have you met the minimum 2.0 GPA requirements for the A.S.?
  • Have you applied for graduation  by the advertised deadline?
  • Check to see if you qualify for any of the companion Certificates listed for your A.S. degree and complete a separate graduation application for each one.
