Middle Grades General Science (BS)

The first sixty credits in the following program of study are designed to prepare students not only for the A.A. degree, but also for the General Knowledge exam and Middle Grades General Science Subject Area exam of the Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE).

If you plan to be a middle grades science teacher and are just beginning your A.A. degree, this program of study will best prepare you for that career choice. If you have already completed your A.A. degree and some of your general education courses differ from those listed below, your A.A. degree will still meet that component of the admission process; however, you may need to complete additional coursework, independent study, or workshops to be well prepared for the FTCE Middle Grades General Science Subject Area exam. A passing score on the FTCE Middle Grades General Science Subject Area exam is one of the graduation requirements for this degree. Courses with the “C” designation include extra hours to accommodate laboratory and field experiences.

Substitutions for any coursework in this program of study must be approved by the Teacher Education Program Director. Please note that some courses below may require lower division prerequisites not specified as program requirements. Requirements for Teacher Education programs may change due to legislative mandates. Candidates should request the most current requirements from the Teacher Education Program Director.

General Education Course Requirements


Students must have a two-course science sequence (BSC 1010C and BSC 1011C, or CHM, or PHY) with lab for admission into the Middle Grades General Science Program. If a student has a PHY or CHM sequence, then he or she must take a biological science course to satisfy college General Education requirements.

One or both of the Biological or Physical Sciences must come from a core group; GLYs are core physical science general education courses;  BSC 1010C  and BSC 1011C   are core biological general education science courses. See AA Degree General Education Requirements  for details.

State-Mandated Prerequisites and Lower Division Coursework


Students must have a two-course science sequence (BSC 1010C and BSC 1011C, CHM, or PHY) with lab for admission into the Middle Grades General Science Program. If a student has a PHY or CHM sequence, then he or she must take a biological science course to satisfy college General Education requirements. Additionally, in order to master the state competencies in Middle Grades General Science and thus pass the Florida Teacher Certification Exam in the subject area, the College strongly recommends that students with PHY or CHM sequences also take BSC 1010C and 1011C.

  • 3 Credit Hours
  • GLY ____C - Geological Science 4 Credit Hours (to be satisfied in General Education requirements)

  • OCE ____C - Oceanographic Science 4 Credit Hours

  • Two-course science sequence with lab [BSC 1010C  and BSC 1011C  (to be satisfied in general education requirements), CHM, or PHY] 8 Credit Hours. BSC 1010C ​ and BSC 1011C  strongly recommended. Please note: BSC 1085C   and BSC 1086C  do not meet the state mandated lab sequence requirement.
